The Summer Youth Employment Program(SYEP) is a six week long program for teenagers and young adults between the ages 14-24. It gives students a chance to work during the summer and gain some job experience and extra money.
To apply, students need to fill out an online application by March 15th. After that, applicants are chosen by lottery.
If they are selected, they have to upload documents like proof of ID, proof of address, proof of age, proof of disability/service, proof of social security, proof work authorization, and proof of working papers.
Whether it’s your first job or you’re just looking for something new, SYEP can be a way to spend the summer.
WJPS teacher Ms. Marks said, “I know it’s difficult to find a job. When I was in high school, everyone had a job, and it wasn’t hard to get one. It’s a great idea for the city to help students find jobs. I think it helps develop responsibility and it gives students an idea of what to expect after they graduate.”
WJPS ninth grader Arturo Mendoza said, “I think it’s a good opportunity for students to get a job, especially for those who don’t know where to start. It’s also good for your transcript.”
