With the release of iOS 14.5, Apple devices are receiving a new privacy update called App Tracking Transparency.
What this feature does is give users the option to disable tracking of their activity when an app is opened for the first time. In addition, a new menu in settings allows tracking to be toggled for any app at any time.
The benefits of this feature can be seen by many, however, it can also be seen as a risk in the eyes of others. For example, Facebook has spoken out against Apple regarding this new update.
Since many smaller businesses rely on your data for advertising, Apple’s new feature can lead to profit loss for these companies.
Sayed Shah, a junior at WJPS said, “App Tracking Transparency is good, but we’re about 12 or more iPhone generations in and we get this feature now? It should’ve been a thing a while ago!”
Another junior at WJPS, Nick Martinez, said “Big companies should care about their consumers’ privacy, especially Apple, which is why this new feature is so important.”
