There are many times when students express their gratitude through gifts and presents to their teachers. And there are cases when the gift the teachers receive may seem overwhelming (both price wise and gift wise).
“Some students might have more money than others and that’s perfectly understandable,” social studies teacher Mr. Tesler said.
Sent from the New York City to colleagues in City Government, The Board of Education sent a reminder of ‘holiday gift’ rules. They stated, “City workers may not accept gifts or “tips” for doing their jobs, nor may they receive any gifts from anyone doing business with the City, including anyone whose interests may be affected by their actions as City employees.”
“Sometimes parents might bribe the teachers with money and expensive gifts, but if i were to get my teacher a gift, it would be of gratitude,” eighth grade Erica Eom said.
Many students buy gifts for their teachers to show their appreciation and as a way to say ‘thanks for being a great teacher’. Although the question might be where the limits are for these gifts.
“I would get my teacher a simple card or maybe a small gift,” junior Joshua Cantero said.
Students might find it more beneficial to express their feelings to their teachers through a simple card or a letter rather than something more extravagant. Due to the limits of the gifts ($5.00) it might be hard to pick something teachers might find useful.
“I’ve never expected gifts from my students, a simple card or a thank you would be more than enough,” Mr.Tesler said.
Putting limits on the gifts that teachers may receive may decrease the amount of favoritism, but students should also be able to express their gratitude to their teachers.
“I wouldn’t get gifts for teacher that I don’t like just to get a good grade or anything, I would get gifts for teachers I personally appreciate and feel thankful to,” junior Angel Lee said.
Most students wouldn’t spend money on teachers they don’t appreciate, and the teachers aren’t as shallow to look at the gifts and raise up their grades. Gift-giving is a way for the students to give their thanks and the teachers to feel appreciated.
