The New York State ELA test will be given to out to students on April 5th, 6th, and 7th while the Mathematics exam will be given out on April 13, 14, and 15.
“Students and teachers have been preparing since the first day of school with assessments, resources, and technology. They’ve been using programs such as Study Island,” assistant principal Ms. Poulos said.
One of the major changes happening this year is that students will not have a limited amount of time to complete the test. Changes were made after students boycotted last year’s test.
“We’ve been doing packets and after we finish the packets, we take a test about that topic. If we finish the packets early, we can make a song and/or poster about relating to the topic,” 7th grader Sasha Romero said.
According to Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia, New York state test takers will be able to take as long as they want for each test. Teachers get to spend more time getting more involved and reviewing with students so they can be prepared.
“I think it’s an advantage that students get unlimited time on the test because we won’t be scared while taking the test and kids won’t have to rush,” 7th grader Zoe Weissman said.
