Recently, “uniform zone” notices have been hung all around the school building. They can be found in the hallways and in various classrooms.
After the school’s administration tightened up on the uniform policy in December, the school has enforced a more solid basis on the correct type of uniforms.
Despite the administration’s efforts to enforce uniforms, students have posed a different view on them.
“The notices aren’t doing a good job reminding the students because students should know how to dress [in the correct uniform] by now. It’s almost the end of the school year. It is going to be a sign that I look at and see, but not follow,” sophomore Nyla McCalla sid.
“It’s unfair to have a uniform policy if they [the administration] is not going to enforce it,” junior Jerry Sheng said.
Ms. Cuesta explained why the uniform notices were hung up.
“There were way too many students wearing leggings that are not khakis. There are also so many variations of it [uniforms],” assistant principal Ms. Cuesta said.
One of the signs read, “No WJPS shirt, No khakis, No Service.” This sign has aroused many confusions on what the proper uniform pants are.
The school’s paror, Ms. Nora, explained that a parent called her and asked if navy pants were not allowed. Ms. Nora said to the parent that navy pants are allowed. This is because khakis – as referred to in this school – is not khaki-colored pants, but is the type of pants. Ms. Cuesta hopes that the students would understand this as well.
Khakis can be classified by their pockets. Pants with pockets on the outside are jeans. However, khaki pants have slits for their pockets and the actual pockets are stitched on the inner side of the pants.
“We [the school administration and I] will need to go out of our way to re-explain what khakis are. Are cargoes acceptable? Maybe, but the policy says it is not. We would need to gain more clarity. If they [other variations of khaki-colored pants] are not okay, we would need to set notice,” Ms. Cuesta said.
Despite the confusions, the administration hopes that the students will adhere with the uniform code that the students have been conformed to for the past years.
