Remote Day or Inconvenience Day?

The city awakened, enveloped in white powdery snow, the cold wind brusheed through the trees, while the sun glistened off of all the glitter that mother nature gave us. However, students sat chained to their devices, their gaze being locked on the diminishing glow that glazed over their eyes.

In the aftermath of the COVID Pandemic, the New York City Department of Education made the decision to transform traditional snow days students knew and loved, into remote days. Students must attend their standard classes of the day online, although simplicity is not a guarantee with remote days.

Issues with technology occurred on the remote day on February 13th, like Google’s email service shutting down due to the mass amount of students all over the city trying to conduct the school day.

In addition, snow interfered with WiFi signals, adding further inconvenience to the students’ remote day.

WJPS 12th grader, Nathaniel Granger stated, “I do think that it is unfair towards students because it’s unrealistic to expect them to do work on a day they normally would have off, and regarding the tech issues, students could have bad wifi, or google could shut down due to all the students use of their google accounts like it has in the past couple of remote days.”
