Step Team Stomps

Step+Team+Stomps

It’s that time of year when WJPS brings back the precision step team. According to stepafrika.org “stepping is a percussive, highly-energetic art form first developed through song and dance rituals.”

WJPS 10th grader Samantha Almonte said, “I think it’s fun and something different to do on your free time. Not many schools have a step team so It’s something unique.”

The precision step team started in 2012 at WJPS. It has been accessible for both middle schoolers and high schoolers to join.

This year, tryouts were held at the WJPS auditorium with 20 students from sixth to 12th grade making the team.

Practices for the step team are held in the auditorium after school Thursdays and Fridays from 2:30pm to 4pm. The step team performs at most WJPS shows.

WJPS teacher and step team adviser Ms. Shields said, “I’m excited, we had to take a little break during COVID but we did have a team last year. I feel like this year we’re really trying to recruit more members.”
