YouTube, a platform where you could share videos, experiments with a new blocker that’s sole purpose is to determine if a user is using an ad blocker and then notifying them to disable the ad blocker. 

Ads are YouTube’s main source of income aside from their monthly subscription service, YouTube Premium, which is a service that stops ads from pausing on videos for a cost.

Joseph Vega, WJPS senior, commented, “I think it is really annoying because I and other people use ad blockers because YouTube is known for having very long and unskippable ads.¨

This blocker has not been instituted for the entirety of YouTube’s user base, instead it is being tested on a small group of viewers who will be notified promptly to disable whatever ad blocker they may be using, allowing an ad to play on the video.

WJPS math teacher, Mr. Gardner stated, “That’s how they make revenue, they need the ads to run. Which is understandable. Although in my opinion the youtube ad model has really become intrusive recently so I understand why people would use ad blocker.”
