No More Snow Days

There will be no more snow days for the school year of 2022-23 for New York City public schools..This policy first started in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic got worse and students started using remote learning.

“So, sorry kids – no more snow days, but it’s going to be good for you!” David C. Banks, the New York City Department of Education chancellor, said in an interview with “Good Day New York.”

Rather than letting kids have no school learning during the snow days, it will shift to remote learning. Because of the pandemic, switching to remote will be less complicated. The DOE has already distributed thousands of devices to support the transition to remote learning,

According to New York State law, students must attend classes 180 out of 365 days, not including the 13 holidays. So, by canceling snow days, NYC schools will meet state law.

Ms. Salcedo, WJPS staff member, stated, “I think the policy is fine, because students won’t miss their class when a snow day occurs and they will still get education.”

WJPS senior, Francesca Ljubicic said, “I kinda think that snow days should go back to how they were before when we didn’t have to attend school at all, but maybe there’s a reason for changing.”
