Throughout the winter, due to the snowstorms, students have been finding ways to stay warm and get through this winter safely. There are tips on how to stay warm and safe, in a smart and easy way.

  1. DIY(do it yourself) a pair of wool insoles to keep one’s feet toasty.
  2. Shave the pills off winter clothes with a razor. This will help keep sweaters and hoodies looking new.
  3. Rub ‘Vicks Vapor Rub’ on the soles of one’s feet to get rid of a cough. Waiting 5-15min with the rub on should get rid of any coughs.
  4. Use pool noodles to keep winter boots straight. It is optional to cut them by the different boots height
  5. Prevent frost from building on car windows by filling a spray bottle with ¾ parts vinegar and ¼ parts water. Vinegar contains acetic acid which raises the melting point of water and prevents it from freezing. Spray it on the night before a snowstorm. If it is already frozen, spray it to melt the ice off.
  6. Use the hand-sanitizer to de-ice car locks. The alcohol in the hand-sanitizer will help remove the ice but only use the ones with 60% alcohol.
  7. Make/buy a draft stopper to stop the chilly breeze from creeping in. A draft stopper can be made with a piece of fabric filled with rice.
  8. For women or girls, fleeced-lined tights will be a better choice than leggings. It will keep the legs warmer.

“I use hand warmers to keep me warm during the winter,” sophomore Nicole Yu said.

9. After a shower, using a microfiber-bristle brush might be a good idea. Going out in the cold with damp hair will result in catching a cold. The microfiber-bristle brush removes all excess water and cuts down on drying time

10. Washing ones face with oil helps to moisturize the skin. Oil takes oil out and this method doesn’t leave the skin as dry as soap cleaners do.

11. Mittens are much more warmer than gloves because it has more surface area

12. Apply cooking spray on snow shovels. It keeps the snow from sticking and building up.

13. Don’t wear cotton against your skin: it will remain damp if one sweats, use silks and wool clothing instead.

“I stay home bundled up in my blankets a lot during the winter” sophomore Janae Kea said.

14. Warmest way to wear a scarf(3:45 the hidden knot): loop the scarf around your neck and tie a knot in the front. Then tuck the knot under your first loop.

15. Last but not least, how to make a great hot-chocolate on a chilly day: Nutella+milk+marshmallows(optional). Please do not try this if allergic to nuts because Nutella contains nuts.

“Winter is cold so I tend to stay home and drink coffee,” junior Eduardo Escamilla said.
