Joe Gardner, a middle-aged jazz musician, just got offered the opportunity of a lifetime to play for his idol, Dorothea Williams. He’s running through the crowded New York City streets and within seconds falls into a sewer.

With his soul now out of his body, he desperately tries to find his way back to his body and finds an unborn soul named “22” who has no desire to go to Earth. Taking the place of their mentor, he presents the events of his life hoping to find 22’s “spark,” but ends up being distraught over his own failures feeling like he’s amounted to nothing.
