Ouija, the film directed by Stiles White and produced by Platinum Dunes, is about a group of friends who decide to communicate with a recently deceased loved one who played with the famous Ouija board that is said to be used to communicate with spirits.

This film is based around Laine (Olivia Cooke), her sister (Ana Coto) and their friends, Pete (Douglas Smith), Trevor (Daren Kagasoff), and Isabelle (Bianca A. Santos) who try to contact the spirit of their friend, Debbie (Shelley Hennig) who committed suicide by hanging herself. The spirit they come in contact with while playing with the Ouija board, begins to terrorize the group and ends up killing everyone except for Laine and her sister.

The film received an 8% on  Rotten Tomatoes, stating, “The movie went by slowly, steadily, although no one seems to be moving it in that direction, the Ouija planchette points to NO.” Receiving an average rating of 3.2/10, the 89-minute, PG-13 film was not appealing to many.

“Ouija is hampered by the fact that watching a bunch of people sitting around a table is not inherently cinematic,” Michael O’Sullivan, Washington Post.

A lot of people felt that the film was going to be a huge success, but it wasn’t and received a lot of negative reviews from critics.

“I knew that the entire group was going to end up getting killed after Isabelle died, the movie was so predictable that it was boring. You could tell when the scary parts were coming up so it was not scary at all,” says Junior, Adriana Anez.

The movie loses the attention of the viewer halfway through the movie. It tends to be overplayed when the group of friends continue to play the terrorizing game.

PG-13 is a more appropriate rating than R for this movie because of the lack of horror and intensity. Given its horror classification, and it’s inability to deliver on that expectation, the movie receives a 3/10
