This year is a lively year, as always for Francis Lewis sports. The soccer season for both boys and girls Varsity has begun, with both teams trying to win their first ever city championships.

The Francis Lewis soccer boys team is 3-1 after beating John Bowne 6-2 on September 11th, beating Martin Van Buren 2-0 on September 15th, and beating Forest Hills 4-0 on the 18th. However the Patriots lost their first home game in over nine years against Newcomers on the 21st.

“I couldn’t believe it when I heard they lost to Newcomers. Even though this great streak for the boy soccer team has ended I still believe they are very talented and their seniors’ can carry the team into, and hopefully deep in the playoffs,” senior Nikitas Troumouhis, said.

They are trying to bounce back after a disappointing end to last season after getting knocked out in the first round of the playoffs, the earliest the Patriots have ever been knocked out in the past nine years. There are also three athletes that are members of the school on the Patriots’ roster who play some big minutes.

“Playing for Francis Lewis is a privilege, it’s a great honor playing for such a successful team and I am proud to be wearing the Lewis jersey,” senior Costas Mastoras, said.

The girls team is now 3-1-1 after a hard fought loss 2-1 against Bayside on September 8th and a 1-1 tie against Cardozo on the 12th. The girls team also had convincing 4-0 wins against Flushing and Forest Hills, alongside a solid 2-0 victory against LIC on September 20th. There are also two female athletes playing on the Patriots girls team.

The girls Volleyball season is also under way, and a few other sports such as golf, wrestling and even bowling. There’s also a couple of athletes playing baseball which starts in the spring, and basketball which begins in March. However the basketball team for both Varsity and JV are holding a couple offseason practices throughout the week. Track and field is also underway as well.

Athletes can try out for any athletic team at any time throughout the year. Most teams hold open tryout throughout the year and they can just show up and tryout. However athletes need a completed medical and a signed parental consent form in order to play.

It takes a good deal of determination and work ethic to make the team and to stay dedicated throughout the whole year. Without this, there is a very slim chance that you will be playing a high school sport.

“It sure takes a lot of commitment to be on this team, we can’t mess around or else we wont be playing for this team anymore to be honest,” sophomore Tommy Mastoras, said.

We want to encourage our athletes to try out for Francis Lewis and play their desired sport. Spread the word guys, the more student athletes we have playing for Francis Lewis the better. Come tryout for your Francis Lewis athletic team any time throughout the year.
