Singer and actress, Demi Lovato, celebrated her fourth year of being sober on March 15th. The 23 year old tweeted saying, “This last year I experienced so much life and too much death… But I made it through… Sober. #4Years #Godswill”.

The former Disney star has had many positive moments this year, as well as negative ones. Lovato lost many family members and her two dogs this past year. However, she managed to put out her album, Confident, last year in October.

Lovato struggled with bulimia, self harm, bipolar disorder, and substance abuse. She was sent to rehab in late 2010.

Demi Lovato thanks her boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama by saying, “He’ll never take credit for my sobriety, but I guarantee, I wouldn’t be alive without him today,” in a Huffpost interview.

Lovato also stated, “I was dealing with bipolar depression and didn’t know what was wrong with me. Little did I know, there was a chemical imbalance in my brain. Because I didn’t tell people what I need, I ended up self-medicating and coping with very unhealthy behaviors. It’s a disease, just like diabetes: you have to find the right treatment for what you have. You’re not broken. It’s nothing to be ashamed about.”

“I think it’s great that she was able to overcome all those struggles. She really is an inspiration to so many young girls,” junior Nicole Stemmler said.

Demi Lovato started her mental health awareness campaign called “Be Vocal”.  Lovato now speaks about her mental illness and helps young girls and boys who are struggling with the same issues everywhere.
