As technology advances, society has come across an electric scooter that many people have been using as a form of transportation. According to the NYPD’s 26th precinct, it was revealed that these scooters, also known as hoverboards, are illegal in NYC because they are motor vehicles that can’t be registered.

If anyone were to be caught riding a hoverboard on the street, parking lot, or highway, they can face a fine for up to $200. Some people try to stay on the safe side because of the banning and only use the scooter at home. In all seriousness, what is the fun of that?

“My kids want a hoverboard. I don’t mind them. I don’t see it as being any more or less dangerous as skateboards or roller blading,” social studies teacher Mr. Tesler said.

Hoverboards are an easier and more fun way to travel. It’s time for the law to catch up to technology.

“Hoverboards should be legal because it is no harm to anyone. I do not view it in a way that it is harming other people,” senior Jonah Sampedro said.

Although hoverboards are thrilling, many others are against it because it doesn’t promote a healthy lifestyle. It decreases physical activity because some are using it more than walking. It has also been said that hoverboards can catch on fire. After charging for ten minutes, it set a home on fire. If an act like this by the scooter happens again, it should be discontinued.

“I think that hoverboards should stay illegal in New York because it is dangerous and can light up on fire,” senior Angelica Darmetta said.

Hoverboards are kind of the prime example of how technology is advancing day by day. Obviously there needs to be some improvements with the scooter, considering the fact it destroyed a family’s home, but other than that, people should use them for fun and be safe with it.
