Students in good academic standing should be allowed access to open lunch?

Seniors are now allowed to leave the building for their lunch period. Most Seniors enjoyed their first day of open lunch on Tuesday, October 20th after Mr.Jurman handed them a specific “open lunch” card to be able to leave the building.

This privilege was given to every senior that filled out a form, signed by themselves and their parents. Many factors were considered when debating on which seniors would be allowed to go out, and academics came into the discussion.

“This year is so stressful, it’s hard to keep up. We’re all trying hard to graduate and keep our grades up, it’s not fair for them to take open lunch away from seniors who are struggling,” senior Alexis Carr said.

Although making good grades a requirement could possibly give students a motivation to do good academically, it should not determine whether or not a senior should be allowed to leave the building or not. Although being a privilege, it does not justify the confiscation of it. Many students struggle with their academics and barely pass. This can be due to the tremendous amount of stress seniors are under. For this reason, all seniors should be allowed outside for their lunch period regardless of their current academic standing.

“I’ve been waiting to go out for lunch since freshman year, I think I would’ve been really upset if my academics would’ve affected if I would be able to go out or not,” senior Josabeth Vinas said.
Although open lunch can easily be revoked by breaking such rules as getting in a vehicle, or arriving late to school, it should not be revoked due to one’s grades or qualifications.
