Exemplary scholarship, leadership, service, and character defined the students who received their induction into the prestigious National Honor Society on the evening of September 17th in the basement library.

Founded in 1921, the National Honor Society (NHS ) is an organization dedicated to recognizing the outstanding achievements of high schoolers around the country. Divided into different chapters across communities in the United States, it has over one million students participating in various activities, from community service projects to peer tutoring.

This year’s inductees were chosen based on the strength of their application – that being, their qualities of leadership expressed through activities in high school and the strength of their community project essay. There is a list of high criteria required to be elected as a new member in the organization.

“New inductees put in as much work as any other member of our organization. Everyone is required to have 15 tutoring hours and 10 hours of community service work. Everyone is also expected to help out in the service projects we do as a group and attend every single meeting,” NHS chapter president Kaitlyn McKenna said.

Ceremony began with remarks from Ms. Paplow and McKenna, followed by a candle lighting ceremony demonstrating the four qualities required of all members, and concluding with the inductees receiving their certificate and pin.

“I hope to present my ideas to Kaitlyn and the rest of the NHS members, and take a part in all of the events we host this year,” junior Alyssa Striano said.
