Should Minors Be Allowed to Vote?

Should+Minors+Be+Allowed+to+Vote%3F

Voting in elections is something United States citizens over the age of 18 are able to participate in. However, some wonder if people under that age should be allowed to vote as well.

Some argue that those under the age of 18 should be allowed to vote because some states can issue full driver’s licenses to 16-year-olds.

U.S. Congresswoman Grace Meng representing Queens has introduced legislation to replace the 26th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution with one that would allow 16 and 17-year-olds to vote. She stated that teens “continue to fight and advocate for so many issues that they are passionate about from gun safety to the climate crisis,” and that it is therefore “fair to also allow them to vote.”

WJPS junior Elias Bautista said, “Minors should not be allowed to vote because they can follow fake news and should do as much research as possible before voting.”

“Lowering the voting age to about 16-17 could benefit elections because there would be more people involved with the laws in their lives,” said WJPS teacher Ms. Seidman.
