Recently, a regulation proposal by former Governor Andrew Cuomo’s budget plan regarding cell towers has pitted governments and telecom companies against each other. This proposal would set statewide standards for the use of newly emerging 5G cell towers and corresponding technology.
Some believe that 5G cell towers are a huge benefit, such as Matteus Shmelke, a senior at WJPS, said, “My phone is running 10x faster on 5G than it ever has. There should definitely be money put into more 5G infrastructure.”
Others disagree. WJPS Spanish teacher, Mr. German said, “We need to do more research on 5G and the effect it has on the environment and humans.”
Due to the recent resignation of former Governor Cuomo, current Governor Kathy Hochul has the power to decide if this regulation should be implemented for all of New York State.
