How COVID-19 impacted Francis Lewis Sports

How+COVID-19+impacted+Francis+Lewis+Sports

2020 hasn’t gone remotely, although many expected it.

Coming into the new decade, many people had high expectations, but that all changed due to COVID-19. Many things were canceled, specifically sports at Francis Lewis High School, of which WJPS students participate in.

When schools closed, the sport happening at the time was baseball. The season for varsity had already started but not yet for Junior Varsity,  although practices were taking place five times a week for both teams.

When COVID-19 hit and the season was canceled, there were many emotions, mostly angry and disappointed.

Michael Kemmett, a current junior at Francis Lewis who was on the JV team last spring stated, “due to COVID-19 canceling our baseball season, I was very angry to hear there wasn’t going to be a season. I was also disappointed because I had gone to a rival school before. And it had happened to be my first year playing on the team.”

At the beginning of the pandemic, many people were wondering if there would be fall sports such as basketball in the 2020-2021 school year. However, as the spread of the virus got worse, that question went out the window.

Nicholas Zuvich, a sophomore at WJPS on the Francis Lewis JV basketball team said “I’m kind of sad because it was nice being committed to something and I love basketball, but if it means keeping others safe, I guess it’s ok.”

As COVID-19 still rages on, the question is whether PSAL sports will return sometime in the future, perhaps after a vaccine is developed.
