The varsity girls soccer team for Francis Lewis Highschool, has made it to the Semi-Finals, after beating Tottenville High. It was a gruesome match, but Francis Lewis came out on top and victorious, and won 3-1. Tottenville High School and Francis Lewis High School (FLHS) waged war this week to see who will advance to the Semi-Finals PSAL (Public School Athletic League). The Class A playoff game was held at the Fresh Meadows Corona Park soccer field.

Francis Lewis, ranked No.4 seed, unseated Tottenville, ranked No.5 seed (A seed is a rank, given to different teams based on their wins, losses, and ties). This was all thanks to FLHS sophomore Sarafina Smith delivering a 25-yard  free kick. This was the second goal of the night.

“I got a boost of confidence before I took the shot,” Smith said. “I got to get this for my team because it’s 2-1 and if they score it’s tied one more time so I had to take that shot,” Smith said.

Francis Lewis is ranked No.7 in New York City varsity, and this victory brings them one step closer to achieving success in the postseason.

In the 68th minute, Caroline Debonis from WJPS High School had a “verbal dissent” which gave her a red card which means she is suspended for the next playoff game. Jacklyn Lada scored a goal in the 57th minute thanks to an assist from Amberly Cabral. This is first time they’ve gone to the semifinals since 2011.

“I am very proud that we have three students that are a vital component to their success. It’s nice for school spirit and it’s nice to see them in a different dynamic and considering  how well they’re doing, its very exciting to see them pursue a city championship,” Assistant Principal Nick Jurman said.

Their next game is against No.1 seed Bronx Science on Tuesday at Randall’s Island.
