Giving Blood

Giving+Blood

World Journalism Preparatory School’s first blood drive is taking place on January 16th, in the WJPS school auditorium from 8am to 2pm. Students over the age of 16 are welcomed to donate to others in need.

There are a few exceptions: any students with anemia, piercings done under 12 months ago, tattoos done recently, recent surgery or blood transfusions, or if you are under 110 pounds you will not be able to participate.

Before donating, students are recommended to stay hydrated, increase their salt intake, get a good night’s sleep, and eat a good breakfast the morning of the donation.

Around 2,000 people in the New York area alone are in need of blood transfusions. Students are encouraged to donate because their blood is going to people in need.

“In order to participate, students must get the parental permission form for 16-year-old donors filled out. I advise them to talk to their parents about it first, and decide if physically and mentally it’s something you are willing to do,” said WJPS junior Michelle Wong, the student coordinator of the blood drive.

After the donation, students should take a multivitamin pill with iron, since a lot of iron is lost when giving blood.
