Students raise school spirit during scream fest week

As Halloween was around the corner, tenth grade student government bodies and their advisor, Mr. Nisonoff, organized the Scream Fest Week. Students were allowed by the principal to wear non-uniform clothing to school for the week as long as it followed the themes. Each day carried a different theme. Students and staff wore clothing according to each of the designated themes.

Monday, October 26th, was Music T-Shirt Monday. Students wore shirts of their favorite band or musical artist. There were a variety of band shirts, including One Direction, Ariana Grande, Nirvana, etc…

On the following day, Tuesday, October 27th, was Twinsie Tuesday. Students not only dressed up in the same outfit, but dressed up in twinning costumes. Matching costumes included Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, unicorns,  sriracha sauce, video game characters, etc…

Students also created and designed shirts to suit the twin theme.

“My friend found ‘Twinning with’ idea on instagram. I thought we can write ‘If found please return to my twin’ on the back,” sixth grader Nicolette DiFazao said.

On Wednesday, students and staff wore pink clothing to bring awareness on breast cancer.

“It’s not only breast cancer, but all types of cancer. It’s a huge disease that affects [many] in severe ways – losing family members and friends. Once I get money, I want to donate [to the cause]. I like to think that more money can allow possible research and find a cure,” sophomore Skylar Kleess said.

Thursday was Superhero Day. The school members dressed up as their favorite Superhero. Among them, Batman was the most popular.

“I had all the [batman] dolls since I was four years old. [I like] the whole look of it – the belt with so much to do,” eighth grader Chris Sanitata said.

Although it was a day of enjoyment, Superhero Day intended to bring awareness on childhood cancer.

“A lot of actors go out to hospitals dressed up as superhero. We can do that in our school too,” sophomore Christina Maldonado said.

Costume Contest Day, held on Friday, closed up the scream fest week. Students and teachers dressed up in their costumes.

On Friday, members of the school store organized the Haunted Hallway. It was held from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM. They used several classrooms to portray scary themes, such as murder, surgery, purge, dark room, and asylum.

“I think it went pretty smoothly. Some struggles were props that didn’t work, people not showing up, dividing the groups up. Setting up was the biggest pain. All in all, it was a good experience and a good way to get students involved and raise student spirit,” Maldonado continued.

Despite some struggles for the staff, this Friday night event raised school spirit.

“It [Haunted Hallway] was really fun. It was cool that everyone would try to scare us. They would scream and ask ‘Help me find my mother’ or ‘Do you want to play?’” sixth grader Vito Lopresti said.

Another student explained her experience.

“When we went to the elevator, it was scary. There were people on the floor dressed in black. My friends even stepped on one of them,” sixth grader Junying Tong said.

Students are hoping to see more school events being taken place as the year goes on.
