The primary election date for the New York City mayoral race and other positions is on June 24th, with the general election on November 4th.
Early voting for the primary is available now through June 22nd. The deadline to register in the general election is October 25th.
WJPS 12th grader John Mihalios said, “I feel good because I finally get to make an impact and a decision on who is leading my city.”
Republicans are largely focused on Curtis Sliwa, founder of the crime prevention nonprofit Guardian Angels and previous mayoral candidate in 2021.
The Democratic primary has several candidates, including former governor Andrew Cuomo, state assembly member Zohran Mamdani, city comptroller Brad Lander, and City Council speaker Adrienne Adams, among others.
Eric Adams, the current mayor of New York City, is not running in either primary as he chose to compete as an independent candidate.
WJPS 11th grader Andrew Montalvo stated, “I would vote for Zohran Mamdani, because he wants to make buses free and that could help students out a lot.”
