WJPS hosted a career day earlier this month for its students. Career day takes place to expand students’ ideas about potential careers to pursue when they get older.
This year, as a new addition, small group discussions with career day speakers took place. The speakers consisted of former WJPS students, relatives of WJPS students, and many more from a wide range of careers, such as journalists, NYPD officers, MTA train operators, and estheticians.
WJPS principal Dr. Bacchus said, “My vision is to expose our students to different types of careers, to identify where they want to work.”
When asked why small group discussions were added, WJPS assistant principal Mr. Yarmy said, “I think it’s because it’s a student’s need. It’s very easy when a student tells you what they need.”
Career day speakers were invited into the library first period for breakfast. Between second and fourth periods, the speakers were led by student ambassadors to multiple classrooms to talk about their careers.
Students were then invited into the library in order to participate in small group discussions with speakers to learn even more about different careers.
WJPS sixth grader Dawood Naseem said, “I think it’s very beneficial because there’s different jobs to learn about and different paths to take.”
WJPS 10th grader Aly Abdelhalem said, “I think it’s beneficial because many will be interested in different careers. Turns out, I’m pretty interested in being an electrician.”
