All WJPS students take physical education. Gym class requires students to do the FitnessGram, which assesses regular physical activity and participation in different sports.
Sports like basketball, soccer, volleyball, and badminton are unit courses throughout the school year.
Even though some students enjoy these sports, there are others who would like to participate in other physical activities. Some alternate activities could be dodgeball, football, kickball, or even yoga.
Right now, many students are limited to only a few traditional sports, but with diversity, they could try even more activities like weightlifting. This gives everyone a chance to find something they enjoy.
A reasonable solution to adding gym units is to simply ask students what physical activities they are interested in and then try them out and see how well the class performance level can be.
WJPS physical education teacher Ms. Smith said, “I would love to add more sports during gym class; however, it’s hard since there isn’t a lot of space in the gym. When the weather gets warmer we would like to take the students outside so they can be in a bigger setting.”
WJPS 11th grader Valery Cardona said, “I would like to play different sports in the gym. I feel like the sports we play now are too repetitive.”
