Boxing is one of the most difficult, disciplined, and hardworking sports. Including boxing in the PSAL program would make kids better conditioned and lessen their aggression.
People mention how boxing can cause a concussion, while football is just as likely to cause a concussion and is part of high school athletics.
The Center of Disease Control (CDC) states that boys tackle football has the highest rate of concussions across all sports.
People don’t consider that concussions in boxing are mainly in professional organizations. A boxing program could teach kids the basics of boxing and staying in shape.
The Cleveland Health Clinic states, “According to a review of 16 studies, the mental health benefits of boxing include: A healthy outlet for anger and aggression.”
WJPS Teacher Mrs. LaVerda said, “I think boxing is a great sport, and I think it shows a lot of athleticism, however, I think it could be more dangerous for teens because of brain injuries, so I could see why some people would be against it.”
WJPS 11th grader Brianna LiMandri said, “I think boxing is great for staying in shape, and I think it would be a good addition as a program where kids can learn the fundamentals of boxing, instead of hurting themselves or each other.”
