WJPS should offer drivers education. While public transportation is central to the lives of many students, driving is a vital skill that provides independence and expands opportunities limited by the public transit system.
While many students are opting not to drive at all, free drivers ed through the school should be available for the students who do intend to get their license. Offering driver’s ed would make learning to drive convenient and accessible for students, as integrating it into the school day would remove barriers like scheduling and transportation to private classes.
Drivers education also plays a significant role in improving road safety. Teens who receive formal training are less likely to engage in dangerous driving behaviors and are better prepared to navigate the complexities of the road.
WJPS 12th grader Jordan Juarez stated, “WJPS really should provide drivers ed, my driving test is coming soon and it would’ve helped a lot if I had drivers ed.”
WJPS 12th grader Preston Ng stated, “I think WJPS should offer drivers ed because it can help people gain confidence driving or taking the test.”
A drivers ed program at WJPS would benefit students beyond the classroom, helping them prepare for college, jobs, and adult/family responsibilities. The ability to drive gives students freedom and options that can shape their futures.
