This year there is a new policy for Public School Athletic League(PSAL) sports affecting WJPS students who play for Francis Lewis High School. Unlike past years, coaches would remove a player from games if they were absent too many times.
However, this year if you are absent more than three times per semester you won’t be able to play any games, including playoffs,
Students and parents were sent emails about this policy and it was discussed during an assembly.
WJPS 12th grader John Mihalios said, “If you are absent a lot you will be an inactive player and temporarily kicked off the team until you get your attendance back up.”
WJPS 12th grader Nicholas Fitzpatrick said, “You have to have a 90 percent attendance rate and would have to be there nine out of 10 days or you won’t be eligible to participate.”
This may have students attending school more and making sure they stay on track with handing in all assignments.
The policy was implemented just before the fall sports season and that caused some schools to lose many of their players.
