Some years in New York City, the first day of school is scheduled earlier.
Last year, the first day of school was September seventh, but this year the first day was September fifth. In 2022 the first day was the 13th.
The earlier beginning days are actually a result of calendar changes; since Labor Day falls on the first Monday of September, its date is subject to change. Last year Labor Day was later, and in 2022 even later–but some are displeased by these coincidences.
WJPS eighth grader Luke Reade commented, “I think that’s pretty bad because summer is shorter.”
WJPS teacher Ms. Ferrucci said, “I think it’s upsetting because we want students to enjoy their summer as much as possible.”
The next first day of school is scheduled to be Thursday, September fourth, 2025. However, in 2026, the first day of school is later in the month–specifically Thursday, September 10th, 2026.
WJPS math teacher Mr. Sulea said, “I think we should have a four-day work week, so we can have more time to ourselves and get more work done, so less is better.”
