Discord has started to integrate text chat into voice channels, a service which, according to Discord, “should have a home for any conversation, including a space where those in Voice can collaborate and share whatever they want.”
If your server is a non-community/private server, voice channels will now have their text chat open immediately. If you are a community/public server, you can turn the option on or off until late June, when Discord will fully implement it in every server.
During the pandemic, the number of users on Discord increased due to how the platform could connect people with others. In addition, schools began using Discord to teach their students by giving them help through the platform and a way to connect with classmates.
The update is intended to help lessen the number of images and texts being sent in the wrong chat and help voice chat users see what others who are unable to speak are saying through the text chat.
Rafey Shahid, a WJPS junior, said, “I think it’s a good thing, as it helps out people who are unable to talk at the moment communicate with others in the voice chat.”
WJPS senior, Stefany Lin,, said, “I like it on one hand because it organizes the texts, so people don’t have to chat in other text chats when they’re muted however, I also think it’s not that good because we could normally create that chat ourselves to use.”
