During lockdown students and teachers were faced with the challenge of how to engage with one another and stay physically active while confined to a digital screen, especially for sports.
WJPS teacher Mr. Maroney said, “There is no real way to effectively teach my students through a computer. All I can do is give advice and suggest some videos that students can do at home using limited equipment.”
In addition to regular gym classes being remote, New York City did not allow sports last year. Francis Lewis High School assistant principal and athletic director Ms. Palomino said. “Even after the Long Island schools and schools upstate were beginning to participate the city did not permit any type of sports activities. This caused some students to suffer from depression and anxiety.”
Being in person this year could mean more challenges. Everyone is required to wear a mask and maintain at least three feet distance which may be a struggle during physical activity.
Furthermore, Ms. Palomino said “Students participating in bowling, volleyball, basketball, and wrestling must be vaccinated to participate. All student-athletes must adhere to random Covid testing.”
