The Little Island Park located in Manhattan is now open to the public. The 2.4 acre park was constructed along West 13th Street in Hudson River Park at Pier 55.
The area is an oval shape with outdoor seating and food vendors and is being marketed by the park website as a place that “provides a one-of-a-kind relationship between nature and art—a break from urban life and a connection to spontaneity and joy.”
Landscape architect Signe Nielson said, “Our idea is for a visitor to leave the city as if going to Oz, to this whimsical, playful little island in the river.” (Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects).
The park has over 350 species of flowers, trees and shrubs.
Starting in June, the park will host artists weekly to perform.
In order to visit the park you must make a reservation on the littleisland.org website.
WJPS student Nyla Briones said, “I think it’s cool, rather than the typical architecture of the usual parks being created.”
WJPS Joanna Dalitsouris says, “I think the park is so beautiful and cute how they designed it to be as if you are going into Oz. I want to visit it and experience all the 350 species of flowers.”
