Since there have been recent surges in COVID-19 cases across the world, many countries have implemented travel restrictions mainly consisting of staying in place and quarantining.
Earlier this month, the United Kingdom entered its second lock down. It is projected to end on December 2nd, if there is not another surge in cases. Other European countries such as Belgium, Germany, and Greece have also imposed lockdowns.
Closer to home, the tri-state area requires people to quarantine and get a COVID test depending on where they are going and coming from. “The travel restrictions within the country and in specific New York is essential as well to moderate and prevent the spread,” said WJPS junior Angelia Loiacono.
However actions like these may also pose a threat to the economy. When asked if she thought these restrictions were effective, WJPS junior Naomi Long said that it reduces the spread through travel but “it’s damaging the economy because, in a place like New York that depends on tourists, if no one is coming then, there’s no money coming in.”
Although it is understood by many that these restrictions are for everyone’s protection, they come at a peak travel time, with the holidays just around the corner.
