Biden Rebounds, Shellacks Opposition in South Carolina

Biden Rebounds, Shellacks Opposition in South Carolina

After falling behind the frontrunners following several campaign slip ups, former Vice President Joe Biden has revitalized his campaign with a massive win the first in the south primary. In a must win scenario, Biden carried his firewall state by a considerable margin days before the much anticipated Super Tuesday primaries.

Biden had placed everything into winning South Carolina following poor showings in the February elections, hoping to stem the tide of national frontrunner Senator Bernie Sanders. The Palmetto electorate was overwhelmingly religious, moderate, and African-American, the key voter groups that form the bedrock of Biden’s coalition. The endorsement of South Carolina’s most powerful Democrat, Congressman Jim Clyburn, proved indispensable, as most voters said it played a factor in how they voted.

Sanders would come in a second after his landslide victory in the Nevada caucuses, performing well among young voters, non-college educated whites, and non-religious voters. Mayor Pete Buttiegieg, once seen as the main rival to Sanders following his Iowa caucuses victory, dropped out after continuously failing to gain traction amongst minority voters. Billionaire Tom Steyer also dropped out, after putting more money and resources into South Carolina than any other candidate and stilling coming in a distant third.

The last stop on the road to Super Tuesday has come and gone, with the race seemingly as open as ever. As the candidates get ready to vie for nearly 70% of the total amount of national delegates, Biden hopes that his last minute surge in South Carolina will be enough to take back the driver’s seat. Meanwhile, Sanders will be looking to put himself far ahead of the competition, perhaps for good.
