The American Music Awards kicked off in Los Angeles, at the Microsoft Theater, in LA. The three hour long show had performances from popular artists such as Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, The Weeknd, and many others.
On November 22nd, the show kicked off with its host, Jennifer Lopez, performing a mix of the biggest songs this year, such as “Hotline Bling”, “Can’t Feel My Face”, and “Bad Blood,” with a group of dancers. The performance lasted 10 minutes and had the audience on their feet the entire time.
“Jennifer Lopez killed it on stage. I love how she used all the top songs and danced to them all. It was like a long mashup music video,” junior Erika Donis said.
Skrillex, Diplo, and Bieber took home the award for Best Collaboration. One Direction won Favorite Pop/Rock group. The Weeknd won multiple awards, including Favorite Soul/R&B album for Beauty Behind the Madness. Nicki Minaj also took home two awards for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Album.
Selena Gomez performed her top ten single “Same Old Love” in a sheer black crystallized bodysuit. Demi Lovato performed twice. The first time, she sung her single “Confident,” and the second time, she sung the 1995 hit “You Oughta Know” with Alanis Morissette, to celebrate the song’s 20th anniversary.
“My favorite performance was Selena Gomez’s because she performed in a new way and I loved her outfit it looked like she was covered in diamonds,” senior Alyssa Malave said.
Bieber closed the night with a medley of his songs off his new album Purpose, including “Sorry,” ”Where Are U Now” and “What Do You Mean.” He ended it soaked after standing under a waterfall.
