This year, WJPS welcomes Ms. Kim, the new ENL, English as a New Language teacher. Not having a classroom of her own, Ms. Kim travels throughout the school helping students who are still learning English.
Ms. Kim is dual certified in social studies and ENL. She enjoyed teaching social studies, but also wants to focus on working with small groups.
She teaches one sixth grade class and one 11th grade ELA class along with three periods of small group instruction.
Ms. Kim said, “My favorite part of my job is seeing the look on students’ faces when they learn something. Working with small groups, I get to see that more.”
As an ENL teacher, Ms. Kim’s job is to help students learn what the rest are learning with the support of language. She provides extra help in the form of reteaching lessons with the use of many visuals.
She also said, “I’m an English language learner myself. I remember being lost and I remember the headache of being in an environment where I had no clue what was going on. I do this because I want to help others going through the same language barrier I went through. That really encourages me and gives me the drive to help.”
