New York City is giving away 350,000 free Chromebooks to students who do not have a laptop or computer at home.
This, in turn, “will help students learn better and keep up with technology,” according to New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The giveaway is expected to be completed by the end of the school year.
However, some believe more technology access could mean more AI use.
According to Mr. Cross, an English teacher at WJPS, who has experience with students abusing the privilege of AI, said, “AI might help with quick answers; however, I don’t want my students relying on it. If they’re not putting in the effort themselves, what are they actually learning?”
While many students find AI resourceful, some believe they are in need of help with studying at home.
“They say AI makes learning more enjoyable,” said Aaiza Shahzad, a WJPS 11th grader. “It is like having a helper to explain to me when I get stuck.”
