The New York City Department of Education Chancellor’s electronic device policy regulation was changed this summer prohibiting students from using personal devices to “support the state’s intent to create a distraction-free learning environment.”
This year WJPS has banned personal devices such as phones, AirPods, and iPads to limit distractions.
The policy has received mixed reactions across the school, with conversations continuing about whether it affects students’ learning.
“I get less distracted and can focus more on school,” said ninth grader Naila Noori.
Others feel the policy could be more lenient. “I’d prefer if students could keep devices in their bags and use them when needed,” said her mother, Fedora Noori.
