World Journalism Preparatory students received an email on August 20th about the new phone policy that has become statewide law in New York.
The policy at WJPS requires students to insert their electronic devices into a Yondr pouch when they enter school, and lock it in front of a staff member. Then at the end of the day when leaving the building students go to a staff member who has a magnet and unlock their pouch.
The policy is set for the school year and students keep the pouch with them at all times. If the pouch is constantly forgotten it is considered lost and the student will have to pay a $30 fee.
In case of medical needs or family emergencies that require a student to access their phone during the day it is encouraged that parents/guardians should contact the school to make appropriate arrangements.
WJPS 12th grader Johanne Castrejon said, “It’s a change, but I think it’s harsh. However, it helps so people aren’t using their phone.”
WJPS 12th grader Andrew Montalvo said, “I think it is better for the school environment helping us stay on track.”
