College is often expensive for many students to afford, and have to take out loans that would put them in debt for life. This debt can make people feel trapped later in life because they must pay it off.
Making college free would not only free people from debt, but it would also encourage more people to pursue higher education, which would result in a more skilled workforce.
Making college free would also increase social equality because nobody would look down on one another for attending a free college.
In a 2025 bestcolleges.com data summary, the average tuition cost of a year of public college was nearly $30,000 and $63,000 at private colleges.
By increasing taxes for all and increasing it more for the rich we could make all college free. Most European countries have free college and are able to do this because they have higher taxes.
According to a survey done by nassfa.org, 54% of students enrolled in college say they struggle with monthly bills. By making college free, wages would increase for jobs not requiring a college degree, as there would be fewer people without one.
WJPS 11th grader Elefteria Karam said, “All colleges shouldn’t be free because everyone would have a degree, and people with degrees would be paid less.”
WJPS 11th grader Eleni Melissinos said, “If college was free, people could choose what they wanted to do in life freely.”
