Last year, the Oakland Athletics (A’s) announced their plan to move the franchise to Las Vegas, starting in 2027. For this year and next year, they are playing in a minor league stadium in Sacramento, California. This is the wrong move, and the A’s should stay in Oakland.
WJPS 10th grader Layla Ma said, “The team has been there a long time so they shouldn’t move.”
Starting in 1968, the A’s have a long and well-respected history. They three-peated as champions in the 1970s, made three straight World Series in 1988-90, and were the focus of the book and award-winning movie “Moneyball.”
Players such as Rickey Henderson, Mark McGwire, and Reggie Jackson have gained fame as A’s.
Despite this history of great players and championships, A’s owner John Fisher has expressed a desire to move them away from Oakland. His main reasons are the declining state of their stadium, the Oakland Coliseum, and poor attendance.
Since their move to Oakland in 1968, they have kept the same stadium, which leads to a decline over time. Fisher refuses to revamp the stadium with his own money, so the blame should fall on him.
WJPS 12th grader Jane Castrejon said, “I think since they can’t get a lot of money from fans, they can move.”
