Summer break is a time to take a break from the stresses of school and mentally prepare for the next year. Making students complete assignments during the summer takes away from their relaxation.
The school year can be stressful keeping up with homework, exams, and extracurricular activities, which is why students then need that mental break so they can come back the next school year energized.
Assignments that are not dedicated to AP classes should not be mandatory, since New York starts the school year a month later than other schools and AP courses are already taking place.
AP students are expected to start work earlier so when they come back, their pacing is already on track. However, for standard classes, the focus should be on relaxation and recreation.
WJPS teacher Ms. Mills said, “Summer is the time for students to be relaxed and go on vacation. However, it’s still important for AP students to catch up on the curriculum over summer break so they come back ready to work.”
WJPS teacher Ms. Muenkwitz said, “Summer break assignments should not be mandatory, but if some students want to work on some assignments, I think it’s still great to give them an option.”
