AI stands for artificial intelligence, which is a system that is able to solve problems and do things that usually need human intelligence. AI was first shown in 1952 by Arthur Samuel, a computer scientist, who created a program to play checkers on its own.
ChatGPT came out November of 2022, and since then people have been able to easily use AI to accomplish all sorts of tasks.
Recently teachers have begun using AI in grading work, creating assignments, and most other school-related work.
This should not be allowed because AI can make mistakes when performing tasks and creating work. This also should not be allowed because AI can grade papers with unknown biases and different criteria than teachers.
A study done by the Social Science Research Network showed that when a student was described as black or white, their essays were graded with a higher score than students who were described as race-neutral students.
According to learningagency.com ChatGPT was less likely to distinguish between high-quality essays and low-quality essays and gave scores near the average.
WJPS teacher Mr. Cross said, “ChatGPT should be allowed because it assists our ability to teach.”
WJPS 11th grader Andrew Montavlo said, “If students aren’t allowed to use ChatGPT then teachers shouldn’t either.”
