Memorial Day is to honor those who have died in service for our country.
In 1971, Memorial Day became an official holiday. It is always observed on the last Monday in May.
People will also participate in the National Moment of Remembrance. At 3pm on Monday, Americans are encouraged to pause for a moment of silence to honor those who have died in service.
Originally, Memorial Day was called Decoration Day. It was officially changed to Memorial Day in 1868.
WJPS 11th grader Joseph Weir said, “I like that we honor the people in service for our country.”
WJPS 11th grader Noah Lim said. “I like Memorial Day weekend because I have three days off and I get to go to the beach.”
