Luigi Mangione is the suspect accused of shooting and killing the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson.
The death penalty is abolished in New York; however, prosecutors have filed a formal notice to grant the death penalty and it is not right to give anybody the death penalty.
The NYC death penalty was removed in 2007, according to the New York Civil Liberties Union.
The last execution in New York City was on August 15, 1963.
There was a nationwide manhunt that caught Luigi Mangione days later in Pennsylvania. Investigators say that Mangione killed out of anger for healthcare companies.
The line of reasoning is that Mangione will continue to be a danger to the healthcare industry.
If Mangione is convicted of all the crimes he is accused of, he should have life in prison. This would be a better punishment than the death penalty, as the death penalty should never come back.
WJPS 11th grader Ricardo Aviles-Valle said, “It isn’t right to give anybody the death penalty.”
WJPS 11th grader Joseph Weir said, “The death penalty should be given to him since he killed someone.”
