Everyday people use news websites they can access to stay updated on important events in the area or national or international. Some popular news websites in the U.S. are CNN, Fox News, NBC News, and CBS News.
However, when searching up news on some websites you are required to pay a fee or subscription to read more about a story. This is very inconvenient for people who just want to be informed about an issue..
On an educational note, this prevents students from searching on a topic especially when it’s useful for classes like journalism, mixed media, current events, broadcast, and newspaper.
WJPS 11th grader Eleni Tsiakas said, “I think no because there are a lot of free new channels you can watch like the news app on your phone, you can see stories for free and know what’s going on in your neighborhood.”
WJPS 11th grader George Sfakianos said, “I think it’s pointless to charge people just to be updated on what is going on in the world, it’s just a way to make some profit.”
An alternative will be to reach out to these news companies as a journalism school and address the issue of news subscriptions, emphasizing that paying a fee for a news story is problematic for most students.
