On March 20th, President Trump signed an executive order to abolish the Department of Education. He did this to give states control over their education system instead of having a national system.
Removing the national system now allows for students in different systems to receive state provided education. This is a good idea because each state will have their own system of education, which will be different from the rest, and this will allow people to be able to choose the education they want.
Since the US is so large, the education system cannot be one size fits all, and the states should be able to pick the type of education they want their students to have. The Department of Education was formed in 1979 by former President Jimmy Carter.
According to a 2024 survey by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), 70 percent of eighth graders were below proficient in reading and 72 percent of students were below proficient in math.
WJPS 11th grader Isabella Cirri said, “The DOE didn’t do anything so it was good to take it out.”
WJPS 11th grader Jamie Baumann said, “President Trump should fix things instead of taking it out entirely.”
