A topic that has gained traction in recent years, in part because of the elderly ages of multiple Congress members, is putting term limits on both branches of Congress, the Senate, and House of Representatives.
Currently, term limits only exist on the President at the federal level. It is time we put term limits on Senators and Representatives, who should only serve two and six terms, respectively.
This removes people like Senator Chuck Grassley, who has been representing Iowa since 1981. People need leaders who are better conformed to serve their citizen’s needs. Politicians who have had high positions in government for decades have no way of understanding the struggles that most people go through.
Furthermore, long-serving representatives have a huge advantage in fundraising which makes it difficult for new candidates to challenge them. It’s time we have term limits to give people a fresher choice at the ballot box.
WJPS 12th grader Maya Guadarrama said, “I don’t think we should have it because the elections that we have help whether we want these people in office or not.”
WJPS 12th grader Vanessa Arellano Cortes said, “I think we should have them because the same people are elected again and again and it gets really tiring.”
