Abel Tesfaye, known professionally as The Weeknd, is making his film debut with Hurry Up Tomorrow, a psychological movie that is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 16th.
This film is going to be directed by Trey Edward Shults who previously worked on movies like Waves, Krisha, and It Comes At Night. Also starring in the movie are Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan.
This film follows a musician who struggles with insomnia and distortion of his mental health. It is being produced by Manic Phase and Live Nation Productions with a budget around $20 million and Lionsgate will handle the film’s distribution.
This movie is tied to The Weeknd’s most recent album, also titled Hurry Up Tomorrow. The story will explore themes of mental health and identity while also blending in music narrative.
WJPS 12th grader Jordan Juarez said, “The movie is either gonna be really cool or is just gonna completely stink; no in between.”
WJPS 12th grader Rixiery Montoya Hernandez said, “I don’t really listen to the Weeknd, but honestly just isn’t for me. What I will say is that it’s surprising for an artist like that to choose to make a movie especially connected to his own work.”
